During the recent MLB Winter Meetings, Giants officials received a strong endorsement for Mahle from none other than Bruce Bochy, the team's advisor and former manager. Bochy, known for his straightforward approach, doesn't mince words when it comes to player evaluations. But when he does give a thumbs-up, it carries significant weight.
Bochy's positive assessment of Mahle stems from their time together with the Texas Rangers, where Mahle played a crucial role in the first half of the season. Bochy shared his enthusiasm with assistant GM Jeremy Shelley early in the offseason and reiterated his support during discussions with key figures like Buster Posey, Zack Minasian, and manager Tony Vitello.
"It's one thing to see it in a text message or on a phone call. It's quite another to sit across from a Hall of Fame manager and hear them say, 'I really believe in this guy,'" Minasian recalled. This strong backing clearly influenced the Giants' decision-making process.
Mahle's arrival is now official, sealed with a one-year, $10 million contract, solidifying the Giants' rotation for the upcoming season. Alongside Mahle, the team has also brought in Adrian Houser and Landen Roupp to join Logan Webb and Robbie Ray, creating a promising pitching lineup. "I think we're very comfortable with the five that we have and then the bundle of [young] arms we have behind them," Minasian stated, highlighting the team's confidence in their current pitching depth.
But here's where it gets interesting: the Giants are banking on Mahle to unlock even more potential. He showed flashes of brilliance early in the 2025 season, pitching like an All-Star. His ability to pitch a strong game is a good thing for the team.
Mahle's career hasn't been without its challenges. He signed with the Giants after a season with the Rangers. His career has been marked by injuries, limiting him to just over 20 starts in the last six seasons. However, Mahle has addressed mechanical issues that caused stress on his shoulder.
When healthy, Mahle has the potential to thrive at Oracle Park. His performance in the 2025 season was impressive, pitching 40 2/3 innings without allowing a home run and giving up only five home runs over 86 2/3 innings. He features a four-pitch mix, with a well-commanded four-seam fastball as his primary weapon. His splitter was particularly effective last season, holding opponents to a .196 average.
Mahle's track record includes impressive stretches with multiple teams. He posted a 3.75 ERA over 33 starts for the Cincinnati Reds in 2021 and had 28 strikeouts to five walks -- along with a 3.16 ERA -- over his first five starts with the Minnesota Twins in 2023. That season ended early because of Tommy John surgery.
After rehabbing and dealing with shoulder soreness, Mahle returned to the mound and showed his potential. In 9 2/3 innings, he allowed just one run and struck out 10, with his velocity returning to normal. He is now healthy and eager to contribute to the Giants, having fixed the mechanical issues that led to his injuries.
For Mahle, joining the Giants was a strategic decision. Being on the West Coast was a priority for him and his family. He also appreciates the ballpark, the team colors, and the presence of Gold Glove catcher Patrick Bailey.
The Giants chose short-term options with Houser and Mahle. The team hopes they can build on their 2025 performance. Mahle is confident he can bring his success to San Francisco. "I definitely think I can carry that over to San Francisco and hopefully get better," he said.
