A thrilling All-Ireland club IHC final at Croke Park saw Upperchurch-Drombane emerge victorious over Tooreen in a dramatic encounter. The score, 4-20 to 2-24 after extra time, was a testament to the skill and determination of both teams.
A Tale of Two Halves and a Chaotic Finish
The game was a rollercoaster ride, with Upperchurch-Drombane dominating the first half and Tooreen fighting back valiantly in the second. But here's where it gets controversial: with just minutes left on the clock, Tooreen staged an incredible comeback, narrowing a 10-point deficit to a mere two points. It was a heart-stopping moment that had everyone on the edge of their seats.
Tooreen's late surge was fueled by goals from Liam Lavin and David Harrison, followed by points from Fionn Delaney and Fergal Boland. And this is the part most people miss: if Fergal's attempt at a point had been just a few inches lower, we might have witnessed an incredible tie and a whole new narrative to this story.
However, Upperchurch-Drombane held their nerve and secured the win, becoming the first Tipperary team since Kiladangan in 2005 to lift the trophy. Conor Fahey's two goals and Luke Shanahan's top-scoring seven points were pivotal in their success.
Injuries and a Resilient Upperchurch
Despite injuries ruling out key players Paudie Greene and Paddy Phelan for the Munster champions, Upperchurch-Drombane started strongly, hitting the ground running after their recent victories over Cork, Waterford, and Kilkenny champions.
At the 25-minute mark, the game seemed to be Tooreen's for the taking, with a near 50-50 pre-match prediction looking generous for Upperchurch. But the tide turned, and Tooreen found themselves trailing by seven points at half-time, thanks to some inspired play by Joe Boyle and Eoin Delaney.
A Comeback Story
Tooreen, however, were not done yet. They came out firing in the second half, taking a 0-14 to 0-11 lead and looking like the team destined for victory. But Upperchurch found their inspiration, with Conor Fahey's 41st-minute goal a turning point. Fahey's individual brilliance gave his team the boost they needed.
The game remained tight, with Tooreen's Kenny Feeney and Brian Morley scoring big, only to be countered by Upperchurch's Pat and Gavin Ryan. The teams were tied at the 60-minute mark, and it looked like the game could go either way.
Morley thought he had won it for Tooreen, but Ryan had other ideas, scoring a massive point from his own half to force extra time. Upperchurch's two goals in the extra period gave them a comfortable lead, but Tooreen's scoring siege in the dying minutes left just two points between the teams at the final whistle.
