A Tragic Accident: Australian Woman Dies in Ski Lift Incident in Japan
A 22-year-old Australian woman lost her life in a tragic incident at the Tsugaike Mountain Resort in Otari, Nagano, Japan. The incident occurred when a part of her backpack became caught in the ski lift mechanism, causing her to become suspended in mid-air. The woman suffered a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The resort's management, Tsugaike Mountain Resort and Tsugaike Gondola Lift Co, issued a joint statement expressing their deepest condolences to the bereaved family. They confirmed that an investigation is underway, with a focus on determining the exact cause of the accident. The resort's CEO, Tsuneo Kubo, emphasized the importance of strengthening safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
According to the statement, the accident was caused by an unfastened buckle on the woman's backpack, which became hooked to the chair while the chest strap was still fastened. This led to her being dragged along with the bag as she attempted to disembark. The lift operator quickly responded by pressing the emergency button, allowing for first aid to be administered and the woman to be transported to the hospital.
The accident took place on the Tsuga No.2 Pair Lift, a two-person chairlift at the top of the mountain. The woman was riding the lift with another person, as confirmed by local police. The resort operator is fully cooperating with the police and other authorities to investigate the cause of the accident and review safety procedures.
Kubo assured the public that the resort is committed to taking concrete measures to prevent such incidents from recurring. He emphasized the resort's dedication to ensuring the safety of its customers, stating, 'We take this situation very seriously and will strive to operate the ski resort in a safe manner so that our customers can use it with peace of mind.'
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed the death of one of its citizens and is providing consular assistance to the family. A spokesperson expressed their deepest condolences, highlighting the department's privacy obligations and the inability to provide further comment.
