A dire situation is unfolding in South Carolina, where a measles outbreak has reached a staggering 789 cases, surpassing even the devastating 2025 West Texas outbreak. This alarming news serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vaccination and the potential consequences of low immunization rates.
The epicenter of the outbreak remains Spartanburg County, with the majority of cases occurring among individuals who were either unvaccinated or unaware of their vaccination status. Health officials reported a concerning 89 new cases since Friday, indicating that the situation is far from under control.
As a result, 557 individuals have been placed under quarantine for 21 days. The outbreak has not only impacted South Carolina but has also spread to neighboring states, with cases directly linked to South Carolina documented in California, North Carolina, and Washington. Several probable cases have also been reported in Ohio.
Dr. Zack Moore, the state epidemiologist for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, is closely monitoring vulnerable areas in the western part of the state, where vaccination rates are low and proximity to the South Carolina outbreak zone is a cause for concern.
"We know there's a lot of back and forth travel, so that is certainly a concern," Moore stated during a media briefing.
North Carolina health officials have reported 14 cases as of Tuesday, some with direct links to South Carolina. The situation has led to more than 170 people being placed under quarantine in Union County, North Carolina, connected to a case at Shining Light Baptist Academy, a private Christian school with children as young as 6 weeks old.
The quarantine orders stem from an unvaccinated child who attended the school and contracted measles linked to the South Carolina outbreak. According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, only 60.1% of students at Shining Light Baptist Academy are vaccinated against measles.
Dr. Deborah Greenhouse, a pediatrician in Columbia, expressed her sadness and concern, emphasizing the need for continued education and understanding among families in South Carolina. "We need to increase our vaccination rates and comply with isolation and quarantine measures to shut this outbreak down," she said.
Most of those affected by the outbreak are children and teenagers, according to health officials. At least 23 schools in South Carolina have students in quarantine, highlighting the impact on the education system.
The South Carolina outbreak has spread rapidly, with cases first reported in late September and gaining momentum during the holiday season. This milestone comes at a critical time for the U.S., as the country teeters on the brink of losing its measles elimination status.
During a call with reporters, Dr. Ralph Abraham, the new principal deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, downplayed the severity of the situation, attributing it to "the cost of doing business" with porous borders and communities choosing to remain unvaccinated.
While Abraham acknowledged the effectiveness of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine, he did not explicitly encourage vaccination in outbreak areas.
The year 2025 saw a record-breaking number of measles cases in the U.S., with 2,255 cases reported, the highest since 1991, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So far in January, 416 cases have been confirmed nationwide, with the vast majority (93%) of patients being unvaccinated.
