Get ready, because the future of Siri is about to get a major upgrade! Apple's partnership with Google is set to revolutionize how we interact with our virtual assistant, and the early previews are incredibly exciting. This collaboration leverages Google's cutting-edge Gemini models to bring a whole new level of intelligence to Siri.
We already had a glimpse of what to expect thanks to announcements at WWDC 2024 and even a now-deleted iPhone 16 ad. But the recent launch of Google's Gemini Personal Intelligence has given us a sneak peek at what's in store.
Imagine Siri, but smarter.
Gemini Personal Intelligence is designed to draw on a wealth of personal information to provide customized, context-aware responses. This means it can pull specific details from your various Google apps and services, including:
- Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, etc.)
- Google Photos
- Your YouTube watch history
- All of your Google search activity (Search, Shopping, News, Maps, Google Flights, and Hotels)
How will this translate to the Apple experience?
Well, the Apple version will naturally integrate with your Apple apps, such as Mail, Calendar, Photos, and Notes.
A Real-World Example
Google's Josh Woodward shared a compelling example of how Personal Intelligence helped him. He needed new tires for his minivan and asked Gemini. Instead of just giving him the tire size, Gemini went further, suggesting options based on his family's road trips, which it found in Google Photos. It even pulled ratings and prices!
Addressing the Elephant in the Room: Hallucinations
But here's where it gets controversial... AI hallucinations – where the system fabricates information – are a major concern. Google says its new feature will show you exactly what assumptions it's making, giving you the chance to verify or correct them.
Gemini will also try to reference the information it used from your connected sources so you can verify it. If something feels off, you can correct it on the spot. You can also tell it to give you a new answer without personalization.
Privacy First
And this is the part most people miss... Google emphasizes that you must opt in to Personal Intelligence, and you control which apps are included. Connecting your apps is off by default. You choose to turn it on, decide exactly which apps to connect, and can turn it off anytime.
Your data never leaves the Google ecosystem. The Apple version will only access data within your apps and your iCloud account.
The Bottom Line
For our purposes, imagine everything powered by Google is instead powered by Apple. It will access your Apple apps, use your iCloud data, and run either on-device or on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers.
