Electric vehicle batteries defy expectations with impressive longevity!
A groundbreaking survey in the UK has revealed a surprising truth about electric car batteries. The study, conducted by Generational, a battery health specialist, analyzed a massive 8,000 EVs from 36 manufacturers, covering a wide range of ages and mileages. The results? The average state of health (SoH) for these batteries was a remarkable 95%, far surpassing the 70% threshold typically set by manufacturers for battery replacement.
But here's where it gets even more intriguing: even the oldest EVs, aged 8 to 12 years, maintained a median battery SoH of 85%. The 25th percentile of these senior EVs still had an average battery SoH of 82%, and the best-maintained models in this age group retained an astonishing 90% of their original capacity.
Generational's CEO, Paul Philpott, emphasized the significance of these findings, stating, "EV batteries are outperforming expectations, and this data proves it. With an average SoH above 95%, it's clear that these batteries are more resilient than many believed."
And this is the part most people miss—mileage isn't always a reliable indicator of battery health. Generational found that EVs with over 100,000 miles often exhibit battery health between 88% and 95%, challenging conventional valuation models. This means a higher-mileage, newer model might have a healthier battery than an older one with fewer miles.
This study offers a much-needed glimpse into battery degradation, a concern for many considering the switch to EVs. Insurers can use this data to provide more accurate quotes, and fleet operators can better understand ownership costs. Moreover, Generational suggests 'battery passports'—standardized battery condition reports—to give used EV buyers transparency about the battery health of their potential purchases.
Philip Nothard, Chair of the Vehicle Remarketing Association, highlights the importance of transparency in building consumer confidence, especially when it comes to dispelling misconceptions about EV batteries.
So, are EV batteries the unsung heroes of the electric revolution? The data suggests so, but what do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
